Iron Butterfly (V. lettermanii 24-30" tall
This is not the Ironweed that grows in this area, but is a native from the open fields of Oklahoma and Arkansas.
Its fine bladed foliage grows densely and forms a shrubby mound up to 3' tall.
Late summer brings purple flowers that attract butterflies by the bucketful.

Upland Ironweed (V. glauca 4-5' tall
This wonderful Pennsylvania native attracts hoards of butterflies late in the season with its large clusters of rich purple flowers.
It is a statuesque plant growing 4-5 feet tall, and is not for the small garden.
