Characteristics, Uses, and Fun Facts
Solomon’s Seal are very easy to care for perennials wanting part to full shade and average gardens soils. They spread by underground rhizomes (big fat roots), but not invasively, and will form dense colonies over time. All are good cut stems with or without the flowers and make an architectural statement both in the garden and in a vase. Sweetly fragrant, small white flowers hang like little bells from the leaf axils in early May. The taller forms attract hummingbirds.
Various species of Solomon's Seal are found around the world and all have been used in folk medicines. It has been used by Native American healers and in ancient Chinese medicine in lung, stomach and skin complaints. Numerous eastern North American tribes, including the Cherokee, Chippewa, Iroquois, and Menominee, used plants of the genus as an analgesic or stimulant, or as a dermatological, cathartic, gynecological, and gastrointestinal aid.
