Characteristics, Uses, and Fun Facts
Perennial Hibiscus are sun-loving natives that are terrific garden plants being tough and low maintenance. They grow best planted in full sun and take average to wet soils. A heat lover, perennial Hibiscus are slow to leaf out in spring. They generally start to emerge in Ohio around mid-May. Don’t be concerned and think they’re dead. Once it warms up perennial hibiscus are fast growers.
Producing huge flowers, up to 10" wide, in a variety of bright colors including shades of red, pink, white, and bi-colors, Hibiscus provide bold color that is easily seen and appreciated from quite a distance, and some of the newer selections boast bronze or purple foliage.
Perennial Hibiscus are large plants growing 3-6’ tall depending on variety and look best planted in the middle or back of the border. However, don’t be afraid to cut the plants back in late spring to maintain a more reasonable size.
