Special Care Instructions
Removing spent flowers will increase the plants vigor and extend the plants bloom time. However removing these cones also removes the yummy seeds sought after by songbirds. Leave a few behind in early fall.
Flowering Time
July through September. Individual flowers have a long life on the plant or in a vase.
Characteristics, Uses, and Fun Facts
Prized for their large, brightly colored flowers, coneflowers have become a mainstay in today’s landscapes. Their color and form combine equally well in the wildflower or urban garden. Most varieties make excellent cut flowers. The cones hold up well into winter providing architectural interest as well as attracting seed eating birds. Coneflowers perform best in full sun to light shade. They prefer consistent moisture to avoid leaf burn and early petal decline. Being native, they are well adapted to our soils and climate.
Coneflowers are a common medicinal herb. The whole plant, from roots to flowers, is used to boost the immune system.
